Have you ever wanted a tissue box to match a specific room or event but you can't ever find one?! I have that problem all the time, I like everything to match. Well, I found an IKEA hack to give you just that! Using an IKEA storage box and Unicorn SPiT I created my own custom colored tissue boxes!!!
Go to IKEA or a store that carries the long slim storage boxes and buy some. IKEA has different colors available, I chose white so my colors would pop.
Put the box together! It's super easy, it has three pieces: box, bottom insert and lid.
Pick the colors you want your box, I chose three: blue, purple and white. Swirl them onto the box. I started with a long side of the box. I did NOT dilute my SPiT since this is cardobard material and I did not want it to be too watery and cause warping.
I did gently spray a LITTLE bit of water to help spread the paint easier. Just a LITTLE.
I then laid my plastic wrap over the paint and spread it in the directions I wanted.
I removed the plastic wrap then did a short end in the same way and set it aside to dry. I did the lid while it dried. I did the lid the same way, but make sure you get the sides of the lid too. I let the sides of the box dry for about 30 min total and then did the other two sides and let the box and lid dry overnight.
I used the opening from a Klenexx tissue box to trace on the inside of the lid to give me an appropriate opening for the tissue box and cut around the tracing to give me an opening.
I think used double sided sticky tape and a soft silky ribbon to give the tissues something to slide out of (like the plastic on a regular tissue box).
I had some rough edges on the silk so I added some ribbon all the way around the lid to cover them up and taped them on the inside. Repeat on both sides.
Insert tissue box into your IKEA box and place the lid on top and pull a tissue through and voila! Custom colored tissue box!

Did you seal the cardboard box first with anything AND did you seal it as a finish?

Love this! I buy the big boxes at Costco and they assort the colors. I really dislike blue, if I do this I can make one I like and never have to look at a blue tissue box again!
