Chokecherry. There are large pits inside each berry thus the name. They are not sweet, people in the Rocky Mts pick them and make jelly. BIRDS love them.

Grew up with those in South Dakota and are delicious. Haven't seen one for 40+ years! Thanks. They can get 20+ feet tall as I recall.

Question for you: Do the birds, or other animals like deer, eat it? If they don't then it's probably poisonous. My grandmother said that any tree or bush that has berries or fruit on it if the birds won't eat it then it's probably just a weed. Some weeds can have berry cluster seedlings depending on the weed. I had some that turned purple like a grape but the birds wouldn't touch it. It would also get tall with thick stems and good sized leaves. I can't tell you the name but hope this helps.

take a branch of it into your local Extension service, they will tell you. Look up in the White Pages for your county government, then look for the Extension office of your nearest Agricultural college/university. Every county has one. Your taxes pay for it so get some use of it. :-)

If it is a tree, I would say it is a Chokecherry. My grandparents had many in there yard when I was growing up. The fruit is very tart, but like others have said the fruit makes wonderful jams and jellies. My grandmother also would make a Chokecherry juice that she could can. She loved to put this over ice cream.

I believe it is a currant bush. Look at some images of a currant bush and see if that is what it is.

Currants look just like this and make wonderful jelly. Take them to a garden store and I believe they are Currants!

By the way, they grow new bushes everywhere a seed is dropped. I ended up getting rid of mine for that reason because the birds help distribute them also.
