How To Spray Paint Outdoor Chairs
by

Some of our outdoor porch chairs were ho-hum - in good shape, but lacking any type of personality - so I used a can of red spray paint to give our once-tired-looking chairs a quick and easy makeover. We are thrilled with the results!
If you have outdoor chairs that could benefit from a fresh look, here are some tips to help your painting go smoothly:
1. Decide which parts you want to paint and then mask off the rest (don't forget the underside!).
2. Use a good quality spray paint (I used a gloss protective enamel spray paint).
3. Put your chair on a protective cloth and spray outdoors on a day when it's not too windy or humid.
4. Spray with a light touch. Several lighter coats turn out nicer than one heavy coat.
5. Once your chair is dry enough to turn over (be patient!), then spray the underside.
6. Wait 24 hrs. for paint to cure.
One can of paint covered these two chairs - though the underside is not as covered as the parts that are visible. You can see photos of all the steps at our website!

Nanci Nottingham on May 15, 2015@Helen I painted my nylon seating with spray paint. worked great! has held up very well! they were orange and I painted them blue. I didn't paint the black metal part because I was keeping that black. I used the spray paint that works well on the plastic resin chairs. no chipping at all!

Front Porch Ideas on May 20, 2015@Nanci Nottingham Did you paint those freehand or use a stencil? They are just fantastic. That is a super creative idea. Would it be ok if we shared your idea and pictures on our website and Facebook page? Our readers would really enjoy learning how you did that. Awesome! Thank you for showing your chairs to us!

What is the name of the spray paint that is good for plastic resin chairs? I need to paint mine too. Thanks!🌴 Mine are just like yours.

I have repainted my chairs twice. Used spray paint both times for the metal. For webbing: 1st time used chalk paint with chalk paint sealer. Worked great! 2nd time used spray paint. Also worked quite well. Just make sure to cover well with 2 or 3 light coats. I missed a couple small spots and can see them. Although no one else ever notices. Lol. Both processes worked well and saved me from buying new chairs! Plus I got the color I wanted each time. Win, win!!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Did you have trouble with bugs or other things getting into your fresh paint job? If so, is there anything you did to solve this problem?
What an improvement! The chairs look great! The part that you masked off ripped on my chairs about a month ago and when I saw your project was really excited thinking about replacing the material since I was going to see it here… is there an easy way to replace the material that you know of? Do I need a professional to do it? Should I get new chairs? Just so you know I live in Central America so access to tools/materials is limited but can get creative as needed. Thanks in advance for your reply.
