Spray the walls down with fabric softener and water. Remove the paper and wash the walls down with white vinegar and water to remove the glue residue. Allow to dry and prime the walls. Again allow the primer to dry and paint.
  • I am going to be truthful here- and I have removed a ton of wallpaper in my life- grass cloth is a royal pain the a$$ to remove! I would first wet down with hot water in a spray bottle at the top of the wallpaper and on a seam line. I put a towel down at the base of the wall to catch water dripping down. If the wall paper loosens then you know they prepared the walls with sizing and it should come off. You can use hot water with some fabric softener too as Janet stated above but I have usually had luck with just hot water. Some people rent steamers which make for a very hot job but they do remove the paper. But I am giving you fair warning- I tried to remove grass cloth once on a client's house and it was an utter disaster. So be prepared for a back up plan. good luck

If the grass cloth was hung correctly it will be fairly easy to remove. Fabric softener and vinegar are cute, steamers are a pain. head for Lowes or ? and pick up a bottle of Piranha wallpaper remover. It will soften the paste so you can scrape the grass cloth off the wall and the reapply to wash the residual paste off the wall using a scrub brush and sponge. Saturate the paper. GIVE THE REMOVER TIME TO SOAK IN !!!! You buy the remover to do the work for you - let it do its job!
