I love all of the shimmer, lights and warmth of Christmas decor -- it just gives me the warm and fuzzies. I love and appreciate the more romantic-themed DIY Christmas decorations with golds and whites, however, there's something about the traditional colors of red, green and white that add a sense of soul to my home. Here is my take on a traditional, rustic Christmas.
Here's our kitchen before all of the Christmas decorations. I only had my winter wonderland window display up from a previously posted project (you can see the full tutorial for that here: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/christmas/winter-wonderland-window-display-24540846).
TABLE DECOR SUPPLIES: -table cloth -birchwood vase -berry stems -pine cones *Not pictured: -cake plate -magnolia stem
STEP 1: Put together table decor To set the mood for the whole project, I decided to decorate my table first. I laid down a Christmas table cloth, then arranged berry stems in a birchwood vase. I later decided to add a magnolia stem I had from my Christmas tree, because I feel like magnolias represent me, and I needed to break up all the red. Also to break up the red, I used a white, glass cake plate as part of my centerpiece and scattered some pine cones to fill in the plate.
CABINET WREATHS SUPPLIES: -2 (18") noble wreaths -ribbon (or raffia) -hot glue gun (if you're using ribbon) -scissors *Not pictured: -push pins (if you're using ribbon) -packing tape (if you're using raffia)
STEP 2: Arrange wreaths and hang on cabinets Next, I took two wreaths and added ribbon to them to hang on to two of my cabinet doors. I originally used a wide, pewter/silver shimmer, chevron ribbon and hot glue to create a hanger for my wreaths (you'll see that version in the video); however, after most of my kitchen decor was put together, I felt that the shimmer ribbon didn't really mesh with my rustic/traditional/outdoorsy vibe that my table had, so I decided to stick with something simple I had on hand -- red raffia and pine cones. Here is the new version of my Christmas wreaths -- don't y'all think it goes better with my table??
I simply used a strip of packing tape to adhere the raffia to the back of the cabinet door.
Over-the-Cabinet SUPPLIES: -pre-lit garland *Pictured below (2 photos down): -fairy lights -garland
STEP 3: Add garland and lights above kitchen cabinets I was originally going to go old school by wrapping lights and garland to put above my kitchen cabinets, but I saw this beauty when I was in Michaels, and it was a reasonable price, so I decided to make my life easier and grab it. I took push pins and attached the pre-lit garland to the top edge of my kitchen cabinets. *Note: you can see my original version of the cabinet wreaths in this photo.
For my single cabinet, I grabbed a strand of battery powered LED fairy lights and a piece of garland. I wrapped them together and secured them to the top edge of the cabinet with push pins.
I figured it was better to do this small cabinet this way because the pre-lit garland came in 50' which was way too much for this one little cabinet -- why spend the money if I don't have to, right?
PHOTO WRAPPING SUPPLIES: -photo -wrapping paper -scissors -twine -tape -pine cones
STEP 4: Wrap photo After all the more time consuming elements were done, I took a picture from the wall (it used to hang where my coffee cabinet is now, so I switched the small picture that was on the other side of my window for the larger picture) and wrapped it like a gift.
Then, I hung it on the wall to display.
So here's my DIY kitchen makeover all decorated for Christmas. We will be traveling this year for Christmas so we won't be getting a tree but I'm glad that we still get to enjoy a little Christmas cheer in our home. *Decorating my entire kitchen only cost my $37 as I had a lot of things on hand.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Love it but I worry about those lights in that type of garland and how safe it is. Are they cool lights like led's?
