Our Dark and Dreary Cabin Into a Bright and Cheery Coastal Cottage

When we bought this house we loved it and hated it all at the same time. It had enough bedrooms, 2 toilets, a fenced in yard for the dogs and it was in an amazing location.
But once you were in it, nothing flowed together. Paint didn't match. The feel of one room was different from the rest of the house. The previous owners seemed to like the rustic woodsy cabin look, but we wanted more of a bright and cheery cottage. Make sense?!

For some reason most of the trim work in the house was white, but no doors or closets were white. Nothing matched. We painted all the trim and doors a fresh coat of white paint so everything matched.

The wood paneling in the living room was beautiful, but it was so dark. SOOOO dark. There was wood everywhere. And the house is surrounded by trees so we do not get a lot of natural light coming in the windows so it seemed even darker.
We knew we had to tackle the walls. Take the paneling down? Re drywall? Paint? I loved the look of the texture that the paneling gave, so we opted to paint it. Wow! What a difference!
First we puttied in all the holes. We used Zinsser BIN for a primer to make sure that all of the sap from the wood got covered with the paint. Then we gave the walls 2-3 coats of the paint. It was very time consuming. We had to use a brush to get between each panel and then a roller to go over the panel itself.
Among other things we replaced the 2 chandeliers used as lights and installed recessed lights and a ceiling fan and white washed our fireplace to match the new look.
The front door got a fresh coat of paint too - it was previously a very dark burgundy color.
What a difference! The room finally blends with the rest of the house and it is definitely bright and cheery. It seems so much bigger too!
