Add style to your home and fireplace with this easy DIY Mantel Makeover for under $50. Use crown moulding to add detail to home decor.
We have a pretty stone-faced fireplace in our home, but for some reason, it has (or had) a tiny little mantel that was good for almost nothing. So, today, I am going to show you how we transformed that ugly hunk of wood into a mantel that makes a statement.
To start, gather your tools and materials. We used: Miter Box and Miter Saw; Utility Knife; Drill; Level; Scraper; and Measuring Tape (materials listed below). Remove old trim and get down to the mantel wood that you will use as your base. Check the level of your starting mantel, so you know what you need to do to make your new mantel square and level.
Attach leveling strips and spacer boards as needed. Box the mantel with backer boards to the size desired.
Carefully nail down the top mantel shelf. Cut and attach the Crown molding. Cut corners at 45 degrees so they line up and make a nice corner. We used a water-based adhesive and painter's tape to hold it in place for drying.
Putty any nail or screw holes and sand smooth. Paint and primer, or paint. This is a very easy project.
Before and After.
Look what a difference the Crown moulding makes.
The finished Mantel Makeover! We love it, and it made such a huge difference in our living room. Beautiful. You can find the full step-by-step instructions plus some great tips on the blog.
