The landlord may not approve installed grab bars. Wherever possible, place your furniture at angles, with the sturdy backs away from the wall so they provide handy places for unsteady hands. The accommodations for a walker vs a wheelchair are opposites, so a good bit of thought must go into furniture placement. Of course, you will need to forget the aesthetics and focus on the practicality.
I saw some safety rails that work by suction in a catalog recently. I believe the name was First Street. They sell lots of items for those of us who need a bit of help.
Go to the ADA.gov site, and give your local chapter a call. You may be entitled to benefits you are not aware of. Generally that covers public places an employment, but there is information concerning housing as well. Worth a phone call.
