Place the food bowl into a larger bowl that has about an inch of water in it. Ants do not cross the water. Another thing you can use is diatomaceous earth around the bowl in a larger bowl, same as using the water or sprinkled around the area if the bowl is outside. It doesn't hurt pets but kills bugs, including ants and fleas.
I had the same problem with my cats' food, plus elsewhere around my clean home. I hired an exterminator who sprays once a month. Problem gone. If you don't want that expense, Home Depot has sprays you can apply yourself.
Find the source and point of entry. Get a free estimate from a pest control company and see what options they may have. I use vinegar and works well for me, very affordable and easy.
Find the trail where they come in and put down a drop or two of Terro (I think thats how it is spelled) they eat that then the ants will be gone in a day or so.
I use borax a little bit mix it with honey a little bit of honey an then put it on little pieces of poster board or in lids of jars An the ants will eat it An bring it back to the queen an they will all be gone
I put a circle of chalk around the bowl - Works great, ants don't like chalk, they have an exoskeleton and the chalk gets into their joints - They stay away from it.
Buy the product Terro. The worker ants take it back to the ants den and they all die. Had terrible ant population 7 years ago; now, they are all gone. It comes in a little bottle.
Thanks to all your suggestions!!! Those ants didn't stand a chance 😀
