I've sprayed with something specific for p.i. and also Roundup, but the p.i. still keeps coming back.
I don't think there is a way to get rid of them. There seem to be way more snakes this year than usual, we have seen a rattlesnake and a gopher snake in the mountain trails close by, but we have heard from many people who have seen rattlesnakes this year. Be glad they are not rattlesnakes. I wish I could help you with this, but I don't think there is anything you can do.
Here is advice from an article in"Hints From Heloise" on how to keep garter snakes away from your house: "Mow often and store firewood and other piled material on the perimeter of your property. Seal openings around doors, basement windows, water pipes, and exterior electrical outlets to discourage the snakes from seeking shelter. If your yard attracts lots of insects or rodents, which garter snakes like to eat, remove bird feeders, compost piles, and standing water from areas near your house." My son and father are both horrified by snakes, so I can empathize with you! Good luck!
1st, Garden snakes are not Harmful at all.
2nd you might just want to leave them alone as they eat many things like mice, and small rodents and lots of insects too.
getting rid of them could cause more problems than you think??
but if you need to get rid of the just sprinkle moth balls around it should help keep them away
I have heard they do not like to crawl over hemp rope maybe you could line the bottom of your property line with this good luck
Thanks for the comments, I am putting moth balls out, I have heard of the hemp rope so I need to try that.
Here are more ideas. Mothballs not safe if you have kids or pets.

If, indeed, garter snakes, they are wonderful for the garden.
If your yard is completely enclosed, you could install "snake fencing."
