Do you want to close it off and install an electric fireplace ? That way , you could tear down the hard to clean stone and install a beautiful old antique mantle and just frame the electric fireplace .
Hi Wendy! I love the stone -I would just give it a good cleaning with a wire brush. You can really change the feel by changing out the mantel... Go rustic with reclaimed wood or a live edge piece; modern with a clean lined mantel painted in a glossy white or black. We did the glossy black above our white traditional fireplace and I love it.
You can paint it white, or a nice light gray, that way you maintain the stone but can brighten it up, here is a link to a tutorial of someone who used chalk paint, which adheres really well and gives a nice look on stone:

Thanks for the ideas ladies. I really do not want to stay with the stone though and we enjoy the wood burning fireplace so probably won't go with making it an electric one either, but I really do appreciate the suggestions. Anyone else, please?
Shiplap or tile
Change the cover to a more modern looking one. Encase the fireplace with drywall (fireproofed) and then cover in tile, marble or granite. I have a fireplace with stones and we just added a mantle and changed the opening cover.
