We use cork trivets frequently, and over the course of several years, they were pretty awful looking. Before throwing them out and buying new ones, I decided to try this quick fix and we were so amazed by the results that we had to share it.
Here is one of our well used trivets. It's not very pretty anymore. It has been washed, but probably not as frequently as it should have been and over time, well . . . this is what it looked like.
To clean, I used a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the top of the trivet. This will produce a fine dusting, so I laid it on a piece of cardboard to contain the dust and for a quick clean up. This took only a few minutes. I worked in a circular pattern over the entire top of the trivet.
Next, I tapped the trivet against the cardboard a few times to shake off as much of the sanding dust as possible. Wash the trivet with dish soap (I used Dawn) and a scrub pad. Rinse well with warm water.
Allow the trivet to fully dry before use.
This took only minutes and the results were pretty amazing. Our ugly, well used trivets look almost new again and are ready for several more years of use.
The side by side comparison says it all! Give this little cleaning hack a try before throwing out a well used cork trivet.
