Do you think popcorn ceilings will ever be in style again?
I don't want to go to the trouble and mess to remove mine, but I hat for it to hurt the value of the house when I get ready to sell someday.
You will have to use a putty knife and scrap it off. Make sure you remove everything from the room and cover the floor It is very messy.
First make sure it is not asbestos! It's a simple Mail in test. I know that Home Depot carries them, I assume other places do as well.
Once you determine that it is asbestos free, empty out your room. Cover all that can't be removed and your floors with plastic. This is gonna get messy! Cover door openings with overlapping sheets of plastic that you can use like a door.
Spray your ceiling really well with water. A new pump bug/yard sprayer works great for this. Do not used a used one! Let water soak in and scrape down. Putty knives work great. If you have a floor scraper and a steady light hand, that works really well!
When all scraped, use plastic to wrap up debris and haul out.
**KEEP TEST RECORDS ON FILE!!!
Disposing of asbestos into the trash is subject to fines and imprisonment.
Hope that helps

Heres the test kit
Spray with warm water then scrape into wash basin with a wide drywall knife :-)
Fill a pump-type garden sprayer with plain water. Lightly mist a small section of the ceiling...about 3' x 3'. Allow it to sit for about one minute, then scrape with a large trowel. It makes a horrendous mess on the floor and all surfaces, but it is the easiest way to remove the popcorn.
Hardware stores carry a tool to scrape most of it off. We had to do this to an old fashioned ceiling. It is not hard to do, just messy. Cover all the furniture (or remove it) and carpet before beginning. Plan to spend some time. We repainted our ceiling as a textured ceiling (but not popcorn) and it turned out really nice. Hope yours comes out nice too!

How to Remove Popcorn Ceilings in 30 Minutes
Some people I know that have done this used a spray bottle with water and a wide blade putty knife. Start in the corner and don't rush it. You want the sheet rock to stay put and it is susceptible to the water you will be spraying. Try not to put too much water in one area. You just want to wet the pop corn!
Good Luck!!
Thanks for all the info.
