I recently found an oval mirror at a yard sale for $2. It had some neat detailing even though it was plastic. It had possibilities for a repurposing project!
Here is the finished fall chalkboard sign!
This is my rummage sale, gold mirror before the makeover. My first step was to take the mirror apart and give it a good cleaning.
After taking the mirror apart, I painted it with orange chalk paint. I brushed on two coats.
I added a brown glaze over the paint to give the frame some age and accentuate all the detail.
I added a lamp finial from a junk stash to the top for a stem. The lamp finial was gold and I painted it with the glaze to make the stem more of a bronze color. The finial was attached by a screw through the top of the frame into the finial. I used a drill to make the hole.
I painted my mirror's glass with two coats of Graphite chalk paint.
I stenciled on the word welcome with light ivory craft paint.
I sealed the mirror chalkboard-look sign with Krylon Satin clear sealer, tied raffia around the "stem", and my sign was ready to hang.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
How did you attach the lamp finial?
Does this have to be done with a mirror, or can you use plain glass from a picture frame?
The chalkboard paint can actually be used like a true chalkboard, correct? I like the stencil, but I was hoping to reuse the chalkboard. Came out so nice.
