Now infested, taking steps, what can I do to deter bedbugs in future?

diatomaceous earth - use a breathing mask, then vacuum very well
My girlfriend brought home from a hotel while doing business travel - and she stayed at higher end establishments, not the fleabag no tell motel in a bad part of town. We had to quarrentine her cats and I had them for a month. She called in the pros and they tossed her mattres, box spring and any upholstered furniture she could not rip apart and recover. Carpets ripped up - you name it. Clothes were quarrentined and washed, not pretty. She kept a spotless house, so no matter how clean, neat and tidy you may be, you can still get them.
I had gotten bedbugs for the first time when I ordered a NEW mattress! Can you believe they can live dormant for a year without feeding and survive! This lead to serious research on my half since I was disgusted, couldn't afford another queen mattress, and have small children (so need to avoid chemicals).
The BEST solution I found was a food grade powder called Diatomaceous Earth.
Once it touches the bodies of the bugs it dries them out! No chemicals since you can eat the powder so animals and children are safe!
I have not had ANY signs of bed bugs since I powdered.
Try to ventilate your area if you are going to do indoors (like have a fan blowing out a window) since dust particles will fill the air if your going to spread alot.
It's like salt on snails, but for bed bugs!
Hoover mattress regular and steam clean it to kill off any eggs
When I stay in a hotel, no matter how nice it is, the first thing I do when I enter the room is pull the sheets on the bed at the top down to the piping on the mattress - at the head of the bed. If there are little spots around that piping, leave. If you opened your suitcase, you have placed your things in jeopardy. You bring them into your house. Have everyone in your family do the same.
I used the Diatomaceous earth for about 2 months and i haven't seen any signs. The stuff really works.
Temp SC Ultra insecticide (its the same stuff used by Terminix and other companies you can purchase at most stores Walmart or Amazon)make sure that you are drying bedding and blankets and pillows on a high heat for at least 20-30 min. I spray the Tempo along the wall and floor monthly it helps for all insects also so say good buy to spiders also... Bedbugs can live a long time 1month plus with our feeding...they are about like cockroaches and can live for a long time. just keep up with the cleaning, spraying and dry of stuff.
