Have you ever had a conversation with yourself in the thrift store, trying to decide if you should buy a piece or not?

I used to do it ALL. THE. TIME. when something earned a second look, but I didn't know right then what I'd do with it.
That's what I did with this $6 wine crate I found in one of our stores several months ago. I loved how sturdy it was and was pretty sure I could do something fun with it, but as I stood there no ideas were happening.

So - I walked away.

Of course, I soon had an idea and decided to go back and hope it was still there. Thankfully it was and I grabbed it right up. I also decided I'd not take that chance again and set a few standards for my future trips.
The first order of business was a makeover. With fall coming up, I wanted a rich color that would compliment any fall decor well. I chose a Behr brown semi-gloss enamel, and I love the way it turned out. It reminds me so much of a rich milk chocolate bar! icon

Have you ever used those little sample jars of paint from the home improvement stores? They're perfect for small projects like this.
I needed a piece of floral foam for each section, so I bought a couple of rectangle blocks and cut them each into four smaller pieces.
I put hot glue on the back of each block and added them to each section of the crate.
Then I filled them with 8 fall sprays I found at Michael's for 40% off.
I also added some colored paper filler around the edges to dress it up, then sat it on the table beside the front door: ready to welcome everyone with a little fall color.
I'm so glad that crate was still there when I went back and you can be sure of this now: if something gets a second look from me, it comes home!
