Transformed Dry Sink
A few weeks ago I came into posession of a beautiful dry sink when my parents came to visit baring a hand me down from my late Uncle.
The dry sink was literally the perfect addition for my bartender husband. I foresaw many delicious drinks being concocted on this new treasure. The only catch, my Uncle was a heavy smoker and the minute the dry sink was brought in I could smell a project on my hands.
So agter gathering materials I rolled up my sleeves and got to work to transform the second hand piece to sophistication and new glory.
As you can see, this dry sink wasnt used for much more than office supply storage in its former home.
The most integral part of this project was to not only to create something beautiful, but to get rid of the imbedded smell of smoke. So after taking off the door and knobs I got to sanding. Using my electric sander and very coarse sandpaper it took me about an hour to get the wood down to it's natural look.
For the crevices, I simply sanded by hand!
After the sanding was done I cleaned the wood with a damp rag to ensure a clean surface for painting. To paint my dry sink I used Advance Black Matte. I prefer a non glossy look and had a plan to revive the wood with gold details.
Two coats of paint and 40 minutes later the dry sink was looking good!
Next were the knobs! Since I was using the dry sink as a bar, my inspiration came from the style of art deco. At the craft store I picked up 4 knobs (2 for the top drawer and 2 for the doors). Thankfully I hit in on a 50% off sale and got all 4 knobs half off.
In the end this dry sink ended up looking even better than I had anticipated! The black brought out the copper tray and the knobs and handles tied in the art deco inspired gold details.
A simple transformation that is quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces in our condo.

I bought my dining set in a second hand store. I wanted a claw foot table. It was 3 piece (table, hutch and dry sink) and was missing a chair. It was made by Cochrane and is solid oak.
They were in perfect condition. I paid $300 for the set.
The dry sink is very similar to mine and I am wondering if your dry sink is made by the same company?
Here is mine and I have not done anything but change the pulls.
The pitcher and bowl was a gift and is Homer Laughlin and never had a home until I bought this set 10 years ago.
I also wondered where the copper tray came from but I did see your response to another question about it. I'd love to know which "craft store" you found the knows in? I only have a Hobby Lobby and Michaels near me. Thanks in advance!
