Cut the area out with a shovel. Put ground cloth down. Then put play sand on top. Then you can place stepping stones on top of the sand.
Pavers are an easy do it yourself.

Some people lay down pavers where they want them then cut grass around each and lay them down. Don't do that I would lay them down cut around each assuming that it is random sizes and then dig out just that area tamp down then add gravel then sand then place paver back. I would probably dig out at least 6 inches then and add sufficient amount of gravel at least 3 inches depending on the thickness of paver then add sand enough to make it so paver will not be more then grassy area. If you want to get super exact numbers go on this site and look it up I have seen it previously.
