Have foam cut to fit the top. I would use spray adhesive to adhere the foam, but this will ruin the finish, you can still proceed, it will just be a bit more slippery till you get things stapled down. Sometime I shave or shape the foam a bit, you just need to play with it. Then wrap the foam with quilt batting and staple underneath. This is where it gets tricky, affix one end with a staple gun. Then work the opposite and be sure to pull snug. Test lid closing, make adjustments if necessary. Now cover with fabric of your choice. Pick something sturdy enough and also easy to spot clean. Staple underneath. I would trim off any raggedy edges and finish off raw edges with trim, you want it to be pretty when you open it up.
i've cut a piece of foam, wrapped in batting then fashioned a fitted and removable cover for it-hidden zipper on one end. its padding the top of my dad's navy footlocker.
I found a bench size cushion at At Home. Works perfectly!
You can use foam or an old cushion, good luck!
