Needed another project to work on and found this beat-up chest at the local Goodwill for $10 as well as an end table I'll post later. Now to decide what to do with it!
It was in sad shape, leaving endless possibilities for a creative transformation. I began by removing the hardware and handles.
My dog, Gracie, had to check it out. I wonder if she was thinking, "You're gonna do WHAT with this?" LOL
Once the insides and hardware were removed, I gave it a good sanding, inside and out.
I found a very nice premixed chalk paint by Rustoleum (color - Aged Gray), using it for the base.
I found a really pretty aqua/teal color by Dutch Boy called Life's Whirlwind (a sample jar is more than enough for this project) and watered some down to dry brush over the gray. I sanded again to allow some of the original wood to show through.
Once again, Gracie had to check it out (wonder what she was thinking this time!). I found plain metal handles at Menard's and spray painted those, along with the original hinges and a decorative opener, with Rustoleum Hammered spray in copper. Love how they turned out!
I was at Hobby Lobby shopping for other items and thought about upholstery tacks for some added detail. They had 1 package of copper ones left so I grabbed them, using down the front edges and on slats on top. The copper was a perfect match!
Not sure exactly what I'll use it for yet (if Gracie had her way, I'd fill it with quilts and she'd use it as a dog bed! LOL), but I love how it turned out. And the biggest surprise of all is it even matches the room divider I posted a few weeks back! Woohoohoo!
Enjoyed the project?
