First get settled in. The decide what you wants and needs are. Begin with simple stuff. Paint would be the first. Make a list of what you like and don't like and what you want to change as you live in it for a while. Don't make any major decisions immediately. Go slow. You don't want to get overwhelmed.

  • Have profesionally cleaned including carpets. If you are planning on any pre move in construction, get it lined up to start as soon as you close. Line kitchen cabinets and shelves with new liners. Unpack the kitchen first - generally the hardest room for most people to do. If painting, if possible, do it before you move in, so much easier to paint empty rooms. When moving have all boxes clearly marked - so movers can deliver to proper room. Hang signs on doors, bedroom 1, 2 etc., den, family room, you get the picure. Also order pizza, sub sandwiches, something for all the people helping you move. Have ice chests full of cold water, ice tea, lemonade, juice to keep your movers hydrated.

I always like to live in my new home for a short time before making any huge decisions. That gives me a feel for how we will be using each space...and lets me figure out what each space needs to be just right for us. I typically do basic landscaping fairly soon after moving in to give the home a better curb appeal, and to allow time for plants, grass, etc to start growing....then i add to it as time goes on.
