How can I update my 60’s pecky cypress fireplace and beams?
I had started a white wash a year ago but sanded off most of it when my family hated it.
You could paint it or whitewash it (whitewashing is just watering down your paint with water and painting, so you still see some brick through it for a rustic look). You would vacuum it first and clean it and then paint. Here are some tutorials for that:

How to Whitewash Brick
Neither. What is the look you are trying to get? I'd do a good cleaning with baking soda and a little water. Rinse with vinegar and water. Rearrange everything around the fireplace. Poof! Brand new!
white wash or paint it

I would skip the water washing as it might cause efflorescence ..... mineral salts in the brick or mortar causes a fluffy dusty deposit on the bricks. And its real hard to get rid of once you get it.
I think I would whitewash it too..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbqFMK28sVY
Grout am also a senior and just finished painting my fireplace. So glad I did. A rolder made short work of the brick front, but had to brush the mortar. It was worth the effort. I love it.
Paint it, but go a step further and keep the brick look! Nothing worse than flat brick paint.
