Bug spray doesn't work.
TAKE SMALL WATER BOTTLE CUT OFF TOP DOWN TO MAKE A FUNNEL FILL BOTTOM BOTTEL WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND SOME TYPE OF SUGAR SYRUP(AS LONG AS IT IS SWEET) TURN CUT OFF TOP UPSIDE DOWN IN BOTTOM OF BOTTLE AND SET IN AREA WHERE THE FLIES ARE I PUT MINE ON WINDOW SILL ABOVE MY SINK. FLIES WILL GO INTO THE BOTTLE AND DROWN IN SYRUP.
Fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar, and cover with glad wrap. Poke a few small holes in the wrap with a toothpick, and enlarge just a little. The smell of the vinegar draws the flies into the bowl. Once they get in, they can't get out. I did this about a month ago with two bowls, and killed hundreds of the little suckers. It works really well!
I did what Retailtherapy31 did but added a few drops of Dawn dish liquid. Worked like a charm.
I have found this works well. Vinegar also works well to get rid of odors.
Make sure you wash any produce you bring in the house, from the store, local growers, even your own veggie garden. They were really bad this year, attacked many of my strawberries and tomatoes and ruined them. They lay their legs in them, then they turn to mush and start rotting. It is really easy if you leave any fruit or vegetables out on the counter for them to do this. I would refrain from leaving anything out unless is very thick skinned, at least until the flies are gone by one of the methods above or something you buy at a store.
clean with vinegar and water. They hate it and it will remove any sugar left over.
i use a glass of apple cider vinegar. If you cover the glass with a small baggie that has one corner cut out. The fruit flies enter and cannot find their way out. Evatually they fall into the vinegar

I had a terrible gnat problem and the vinegar traps worked perfectly! Simply place a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and a tablespoon of sugar in a bowl and stir. Set your bowl in an area where gnats are prevalent, such as your kitchen or bathroom. This took care of my problem in just a couple of days!

This is what I do, wash all fruit and vegies when you bring them home and store all in the refrig except bananas. If there were any eggs on the produce they are now in the drain, to address this problem put 1/2 cup of baking soda in each kitchen drain and follow with 1 cup vinegar. When the fizzing stops rinse well with hot water for a min or so, cover the drains with a stopper. For the airborne ones, take a mice sticky cardboard trap and cut 1 in half with the plastic cover on it, peel off the plastic cover off 1 of these halves and place a piece of decaying fruit in the center of it, that will draw them. They will land and that ends the cycle.

Put fruit in fridge! Spray house with fy spray!
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown.
