Our home was built in 1930 and we wanted to update the look of our fireplace and mantle without a major makeover. I just tiled over the brick, added a new fireplace screen, painted the fireplace mantle, removed the giant mirror and painted the dark wood paneling. We also discovered 2 electrical outlets that originally housed wall sconces.
We first removed the brass fireplace screen. Then I thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned the brick face. I painted the dark wood paneling to match the other walls in the living room.
Phase 2- I taped off the wood mantle and applied a skim coat. I let it dry for a few days. I cannot remember what this product was. Home Depot helped me pick it out.
Here is a photo of the tiling done and grouted. We left the floor tiles in their original state. The wall paneling has been painted. It really has brightened up our living room.
I love this screen!
There was a big debate about painting the fireplace surround, but I'm glad I did it.
And here it the finished fireplace and mantle all decorated for Christmas.
Suggested materials:
  • 12 x 12 sheet tiles   (Home Depot)

Where did you get that screen, It is beautiful. I have a 1924 house and it needs one to keep out the drafts when not in use.

Is that peel and stick backsplash heat resistant? Also when you first cleaned the brick, what did you use for that or did you just scrub it down with a brush?

I wish everyone would stop critiquing how these ladies and men do things. They aren't doing it to please you. They are doing it to please themselves and then are nice enough to share it with us. If you can't be complementary, please be quiet.
