I use a handtruck. You can buy one lighter than the old fashioned ones at home depot. I use the old heavy one...I love it . Yesterday I moved a VERY heavy ginormous air conditioner to the garage.
I ALSO bought a 2 wheeled rubbermaid cart..it is a molded plastic....and I leave it in my car. When I go shopping...I use it to go from car to house without straining myself. It is easy..lightweight..and can be wheeled right into the house to the kitchen
How about a "climb cart" that is so popular and has reasonable reviews? I have 2 old style luggage carts from way back - before luggage was made with wheels. For smaller, but heavy items, I have an old xerox paper box or milk crate that I set on top.

How heavy; how many pounds. Many magazines sell carriers for groceries, plants, and other heavy items. Depends on what size you want; how many steps you are climbing; distances you need to travel. I purchased a very nice grocery basket from Ace Hardware about 10 yrs. ago that holds up to 200+ lbs. Look in catalogs such as Miles Kimball and Carol Wright, and others of that nature. There is one made now with wheels that grab steps and climb more easily than round wheels.
Depending on what the item is and whether or not you have an additional person to help you or not...I would suggest a dolly if you’re alone. Or, something like, Team Straps. (sold at Amazon) if you’ve got a helper.
A small dolly can help you out! https://www.amazon.com/Movers-Dolly-1000lbs-Furniture-Appliance18/dp/B0161OMDQ2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1510577370&sr=8-6&keywords=dolly
