I'd begin by adding tile or wood above to carry up to the ceiling. This alone will make a focal point and be dramatic. I'd also paint the brass with a high heat paint. They make it in a navy color, I think it would be phenomenal and so different!

I would add wood to the entire fireplace surround to pull it further out from the wall. You can get faux wood beams to use as a mantle. Example this one runs about $185

I would start by painting the black and brass, sand it and paint in high heat paint, Then I would add a tile or stone around that, you could build a small hearth and use the tile or stone that you use around the surround to match, or just leave without the hearth, you could also paint the wall that the fireplace is on a different color so it will stand out, there's so many things you could do, you could just add a bigger piece of wood to expand the mantle, or you could just paint the mantle a different color to make it stand out, So many possibilities!!
I agree with Ruby. So many possibilities! You need to make a list or album of ideas you like, then elminate them one by one until you choose your favorite.
If it were mine, I think I would paint the brass a hammered copper on the fireplace grill cover. I would put a larger board on top of the narrow mantle and paint it the same color as the rest of the wood. Then I would mount a giant hammered copper sculpture above the mantle, centered between the mantle and the ceiling. Best wishes to you 😇
I personally would paint the wall behind the fireplace a dominant color like a dark grey or a color from your pillows or sofas and being the mantle is white and you have white trim it will look stunning and add a stricking round mirror from kirklands or hobby lobby and they both have great ideas to complement that look.
best of luck, it’s christmas time treat yourself
I would install that fake stone veneer on both walls to tie the fireplace and the wall together and make it look more rustic. You can buy it in sheets. I would add a wide mantle in a rustic material like wood or stone so you can put accessories on it to make it more personal and rustic.
