Regardless if you own your home or live in a rental, deep cleaning is something we are all faced with and all too often if you ask me. I have admitted in the past that I’m a clean freak, and it’s not my fault either. I like to blame that on my parents. It’s always nice to have someone to blame, isn’t it?

This is how I need my home to look like all the time. Is it always this clean and neat? Well, mostly, yes, but always, no. See that out-of-place dish towel on my countertop and the drawer in the coffee table that’s not quite closed properly in the image below? Maddening!
As much as cleaning is ingrained into my inner core, I still hate doing it. Don’t think I’m being a cleaning snob either, please, when my home isn’t picture-perfectly clean, I feel a mess inside. I always admire the folks who can have a messy house and not give a hoot.

It’s just not me and my neuroticism about cleaning either – it annoys everyone around me. I’ve even used a dust buster once to vacuum crumbs off my husband’s shirt – he laughed, but trust me, it wasn’t one of my better moments. I’ve evolved since then and wouldn’t dare do something that today.

With that said, I’m going to share with you some of my favorite deep cleaning tips that have worked for me all of my life as well as the perfect deep cleaning checklist for you to download that will always keep you in check with the chores.

Deep Cleaning Tips
1 – Never Let Things Get Out Of Hand – Once you get your home nice and clean, try and keep it that way. To do this, make sure you do touch up cleaning at least every other day. This means, touch up the bathrooms by going in with some Windex or Fantastik and give them a quick once-over. I love using Fantastik, it disinfects and shines – it’s a win-win! This helps out big time in keeping them in tip-top shape and only takes about 5 minutes or so.

Go into the bedrooms with a Swiffer Duster ( I only use the yellow ones) and give everything a quick dusting too – you will thank me for this tip. It keeps me from having to look at the dust that builds up daily and prevents me from having to do a heavier dusting with some Pledge.

Give the floors a quick vacuuming and then give them a quick mopping. I’ve tried dozens of mops and my favorite one is the Swiffer Wetjet – it’s simply the easiest and fastest way to get your floors clean. The cleaning fluid and the floor pads can get a bit expensive but other than that, that mop rocks! You can see how clean and shiny my floors are below.

I can’t express strongly enough how important it is to own a stick vacuum like the one I recently bought called the Shark Navigator Freestyle Cordless Stick Vacuum – it’s one of the best I’ve ever owned and, it’s easy to use and clean.

I keep it housed in the corner of my dining room, which is out of plain sight, and it’s so easy to reach for when I have to do quick cleanups. If company comes over, no worries – you can easily move it into a place where it’s out of sight.

If you love the Jute Wine Jug and the Jute Placemat   I made, be sure to check out how I made them.
2 – Never Overwhelm Yourself By Trying To Clean It All In One Day – This is where I always make my biggest deep cleaning mistake. I used to try to get it all done in one day. Please don’t do that! All it does is exhaust you and make you hate deep cleaning even more.

Tackle a few tasks in one day and then schedule a few more for the day after. Before you know it, you will have your whole list completed and you won’t feel like signing into a rest home afterward.

4 – Make Sure You Ask For Help – There’s nothing wrong with asking folks to pitch in and lend a hand. Ask the hubby, your kids, and yes, even your mother-in-law. Why not? My theory is if they are eating and sleeping in your home, they can pitch in to help with the cleaning.
When I ask my husband to dust the dining room or polish the kitchen cabinets, it’s such a huge help and takes loads of time off my busy cleaning schedule. Get the kids to chip in! It can be a great bonding experience too.
5 – Stay Organized And Follow Your Cleaning To-Do List – It may sound obvious but, having a cleaning schedule is so important. I always make sure I schedule my deep cleaning tasks and then check them off my list when I’m done. Seeing them getting checked off my list is a great emotional benefit too as it allows me to see there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
