Use removable contact paper, command hooks to hang pictures
Clean your windows, window seals, clean your shades if you have them and/or wash your curtains. Clean the baseboards even if it is with just warm water. Clean all of those cob web type things that hide in the corners of walls and ceilings. If there are permanent planters or a flowerbed, purchase some cheap flowers.
Use white paint in your storage closet & any other rooms that need it.

Talk to your landlord about anything that you could do. Perhaps if he likes the idea and would make the rental more appealing after you move to new renters he will let you make some changes. Go their with the ideas on paper, pictures of what you plan on doing would really help, like one of the projects here on Hometalk, if the landlord sees the project and how it is done, he may agree to it, you never know, he might help with some of the supplies if it is a keeper, or if he likes the results, may give you a break on the rent for what you did. You won't know unless you ask. If you have smooth enough walls, you can use command strips to hang pictures. Just make sure you use enough for the weight, I usually use more than one and make sure the strips are made for the weight of what you are hanging or more. I usually double it. Instead of painting or wallpapering you could tack up sheets. Use your own furnishings to make the place better, lots of colorful pillows, knick knacks here and there and plenty of greenery and flowers, be they real or artificial. A few nail holes that you can patch may be ok, just check with the landlord on that, some are ok with that as long as they are filled and sanded and ready to paint when you leave.
