Needed to put some shelving on the top section of our bathroom toilet. I really like the industrial/clean contemporary look so we set out to build our own floating shelves :)
List of things you'll need:
(1) 10ft x 8.75in x 1in wood split into (5) 2ft sections (We used only 4) $15
(8) 3/8 in x 10 1/2 in turnbuckle hook/eye $3.27ea
(8) Coarse Zinc Plated U-Bolt $1.30ea
1 pack of #4 zinc plated steel screw eye $7.77
1 8ft x 1.5in x 0.5 inch wood (or something of that sort) split into (4) sft sections $2.50
White paint (we had leftovers from previous jobs)
Tools you need:
Drill and drill bits
Nail gun and nail
Chop saw if you didn't let the store cut the boards
Something to turn to screw eye inside the wall (we used the turnbuckle)
Leveler (VERY IMPORTANT!)
Pencil/some kind of way to mark where you want the shelves to be
Step 1: Paint all boards white (I did about 4-5 coats)
Step 2: Use a drillbit and drill a 2 holes that match the size of the U-bolt. Put the eye of the turnbuckle in the U-bolt and tighten the back.
The back of the board should look like this. Do this on each of the side (left and right) 4x.
Step 3: Measure where you want to put the boards and pre-drill the hole for the screw eyes and tighten. Do this on each side (left and right) 4x.
Tip: PLEASE use your leveler to make sure that its level on ALL sides!
To stabilize the back side, use your 1.5 inch board and put it below the shelf and nail gun it into the wall.
And that should be it! When all is said and done, you have a very inexpensive cool looking shelves
The good thing about these turnbuckle is that if you find the shelves a bit uneven its a matter of just turning the turnbuckle until it is even
Another picture of the finished product
This is really something you can get creative on, you can use different sizes turnbuckles or wood boards as necessary. You can paint your metal to black to give it more industrial look, you can stain your board instead of painting it, etc. Your imagination is the limit
Enjoyed the project?

Love the look! What's the weight limit per shelf?

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
The bottom shelf seems to stick out farther than the toilet tank. Have you found that it gets in the way? Have you banged your head on it yet?
I love the wood wall how you did it, what kind of wood is?
What is the size of the floating sheves?
