We needed a little cabinet to hide folders and messy papers in our home office, so when I saw this ugly, dated cabinet for $15 at our local thrift shop I snapped it up. I love to transform ugly, non-wood pieces into pretty ones with a pop of color.
This was really ugly, right? But it had the perfect dimensions and space we needed.
I started by filling the original pull holes and door slits with wood filler. Then I gave the entire piece a good sanding to make the surface nice and smooth to receive paint.
I cleaned the entire cabinet with TSP diluted in water then I sprayed one coat of Clear Shellac, which is what I use some times as an alternative to oil-based primer.
Once the shellac was dry, I sprayed two coats of Homestead Blue by Fusion Mineral paint. Check out my video tutorial on how to use a paint sprayer.
I painted the edges of the doors with an artist brush.
I sprayed three coats of General Finishes water based top coat, satin, which is always recommended for more durability.
I drilled new holes and installed some pretty gold pulls on a different spot of the doors.
I also taped and sprayed the casters with gold spray paint so they would match the new pulls.
