I'm going to have to look for a 12 step program to help me with my Goodwill addiction. I actually tried walking away from dresser several times ,but it won my heart and next thing I know I'm loading it into the jeep. I have never seen anything like it before .
Here it is right out of the jeep. before I did anything to it.
This is the before shot of the top . There is a gap between the 2 pieces of wood and it was loaded with scratches
Several small pieces of trim were missing or broken. These were not the original knobs either , you can see a circle left over from the original knobs.
This picture shows on the right side what this decorative piece looks like cleaned up. I use my dremel with a sanding bit on slow speed to clean out years of gunk. It actually looked like someone put a clear coat of some kind right over all the dirt.
I was worried about the wood being damaged if a used a chemical stripper and a power sander, so I sanded it all by hand . I used my dremel to get in around the trim.
this too had lots of dirt and gunk on it.
This the top finished . I added a black pinstripe to the top and hammered the two pieces back together from the inside.
I purchased a piece of wood trim from Lowes and cut it to fit. One of the trim pieces was gone so I removed the other to make it match. I painted it black. These are the same knobs. They were not real brass so I painted them to match the trim . I also found some large washers in one of our storage bin and painted them black to cover the ring left by the original knobs.
Here she is with a new facelift. I have never seen anything like this . If anyone knows what style it is or how old it could be let me know. I has two very unique features . Beside the two top drawers is a secret compartment only accessible by taking out a drawer . The bottom drawer is actually a cedar chest with a hinged lid that opens when you pull the bottom drawer out .
This is a close up of the knobs with the washer behind it to cover up the rings left behind from the old ones.

What a fabulous way to breathe new life into the old gal! I can understand your reluctance to leave her to her fate at the Goodwill, she's a beauty. Good for you!!!
