Removing is a messy job but can be accomplished by covering furniture. Once done you will have great satisfaction. Have seen ship lap and many styles of ceiling tiles used to cover. Hope this helps.

They now make a foam ceiling tile that is not to expensive, you can put right over that popcorn. If you have tall ceilings you can also take wood slats and cover with whatever design you want. Happy decorating. Oh and what ever you do, where safety glasses. The popcorn will flake off and get in your eyes. That would mean a trip to the Dr. Voice of experience OUCH
I had an ugly ceiling, though not popcorn. I hired a sheet rock guy and he covered it with sheet rock and textured it. I just had to paint it when he was done. It was $400 for a bedroom. For how nice it looks, it was worth it. I get dizzy when I work overhead.

If your house was built before the mid 80's, your ceiling could have asbestos in it. Test first.
