Finally Added That Pop of Color to My Kitchen

Our house is only a couple of years old but everything is grey, grey, grey. The house is modern, but my furnishings are traditional, so I wanted to add a modern pop to it.

I decided that painting the kitchen island would be a great way to brighten my kitchen, so that's where I decided to start.
Even though over the years I’ve done painting, I’m not what I would call a pro painter, so I felt a little unsure about doing it myself.

I’ve been following Hometalk since we started building this house, so when I heard about this new opportunity to Team Up with a Hometalker to get hands-on help, I thought, hey this is a wonderful way to get this done!

I got in touch with Hometalker Amber and set a date.

I’d been thinking about doing this update for a while, but I needed the advice. I ran several ideas by Amber, and this painting project was what we decided to start with.
We went through a long process of choosing the paint color. The whole family took part and absolutely everybody else who came by — everybody had an opinion!

We put some samples on the wall, got opinions, and lived with them for a while. We needed a durable but washable paint because it’s in the kitchen by the trash can and it will need to be wiped down often. Choosing a high-quality washable paint was really important.
We chose and purchased the paint and supplies, making sure we had everything Amber told us we would need. We chose this color because we have dinnerware that has bright colors like this red, and we have those same pops in several places in the house, so we wanted to pull it all together.

We also made sure to move all the furniture out of the way so that the area would be clear.

Next, we washed off any spots on the island that looked grungy using TSP to prepare a good base, and then waited for Amber.
As we waited, I was feeling excited and happy to get the project underway. My kitchen really needed this pop!

When Amber arrived, our Team Up began! We started by taping off the areas we didn’t want to get paint on. The edges of the overhang and island, the joining at the floor.
We protected the molding with tape as well.
After that, we started cutting in around the tape with a brush. This was a great way to make sure that we got paint in those tighter spots.
After that was complete, we used rollers to cover the whole wall.
Because there was a lot of texture, we needed two coats to make sure we got complete coverage.
Working with Amber was great. I pretty much knew the steps before, but she made it so logical and it turned out beautifully.

I probably would have slapped on paint and got it all over everything. She showed me that preparation is the key to a good job.

She explained why we were doing what and showed me the best order to do everything. What she really brought to the table was that order and logic.
I love this shade! See how the color makes those hand towels stand out, too?
We also painted the outlet covers and they turned out beautifully.
After Amber left, we pulled off the tape and did a quick (easy) clean-up. The cleanup was easy, just a few drips of paint (because of my son and daughter-in-law, but don't tell them!)

I wasn’t discouraged at any point during this project! The work was wonderful and the result was amazing. It looks natural, like it’s always been there. I felt so pleased with the result and really appreciated the help and knowledge Amber shared.

Now, we feel like we can do the next project totally on our own—the next painting project, to be clear!

I love this shade of paint. What is it? I live in my Moms house since she passed away and she put in orange countertops that I hate until I saw this project. I also have black appliances and just put in a black sink and want light grey ceramic tile to replace the orange countertop and backsplash. Any advice on what I should do?

How much do they charge for consultation?

This question could be on a numerous amount of painting projects and I'm sure to some people sounds dumb. What on earth is TSP? I see this abbreviation on almost all painting projects as something that needs to be used. Help! P.S. this is my first question ever on a Hometalk project although I'm sure to have more in the future! Thank you Hometalk for ALL of your creative and inspiring project ideas.
