Hi there, First thought, why don't you replace the trees with maybe Fruit trees. Could make an Arbour or build a summerhouse, Place Trellis on top of fence. Grow a hedge maybe?
For privacy and shade how about this....I see you have a large frame of some sort straight back in your photo that is much taller then the fence. Can you move it so that it's in the area of yard that would block your neighbors view? Then you can string wire across it and grow heavy vining greenery to fill up that frame completely. In the summer with full growth it would provide the privacy from the neighbors eyes and also some shade. A bench or seating area could be there also. If you were inclined you could create a patio area there with patio squares.
Fences made out of lattice always seem like such a nice idea to create privacy! If you stand them up to their full 8 feet you could then also use them as anchors for hanging fabric to create more shade. The lattice will make a great place for climbing vines as well!
Hi Jane, first decide on a budget for the things you want to do. Then divide your backyard into three sections, right, middle and left. If your privacy is the most important thing, start on that first. Make a living fence. Construct large wooden planters and plant Italian cypress. Buy the largest cypress you can afford. Install drip lines in your planters and it will be easy to maintain. Then go on to your next section of yard. Good luck.
I have a neighbor that uses his yard, as a landfill. I plan to use my heavy duty plastic lattice panels with the 8' vertical so that I can block his yard and enjoy my patio. Initially, it will be just the lattice, I will plant some deer resistant vines or shrubs soon. You have a lovely area to work with and glance at a few pictures online to get some more ideas! Be happy you don't have a landfill behind you. I have reported this man, the city has been on his situation. Cleans it up and refills it. A city councilman is also his next door neighbor, but only sees the end of his monstorous barn structure that he built to house all his purchases from storage units.
So sorry you have to deal with that. I guess my situation could be worse. I hope yours improves. We should all have the ability to walk outside and enjoy the outdoors in our own backyard!!
