The U-Shaped Rack That Solves a Big Problem
I needed a good storage idea to end all this mess, and I found it. It was inspired by a video that I saw on Facebook, and it took me a couple of hours to build it on my own!
So here it is, the U-shaped shelf that suddenly improved my storage space and allowed me to display all my spices inside the cupboard!
Basically, you start with a wooden plank that is 5-in width and 0.7-in thick. As for the length and the width, you’ll calculate them based of the measures of the drawer you’re going to improve.
Your U-shaped shelf is made out of three pieces, and two of them are equal. The length of the third piece will be equal to the width of your cupboard minus sum the width of the laterals, minus 1.5-in.
You can check the article on my blog to see how I did the math to make this rack fit perfectly in my cupboard.
Cut the three pieces of wood plank, then use the sanding paper to polish the end of each piece of wood plank, to make it look neat.
Drill the holes on one edge of the plank, pour a bit of glue and introduce the dowels. Gently use the hammer to push them inside by half of their length.
You need to make sure that the holes will be symmetrical on the other edge, otherwise you rack will twist and break easily.
Check the article on my blog about this project to discover the trick that will help you drill perfectly symmetrical holes for your U-shaped spice rack!
Then you only need to repeat what you did a step before: drill, pour a bit of glue in the hole and gently push the dowels in, in order to assemble the rack.
The next step is painting your rack.
I chose a white water based paint for this rack, to make it look like the rest of the drawer. Half an hour later, the paint was dry enough to use it.
Drill holes in the inner laterals of the drawer and use place metallic dowels to support your U-shaped rack.
I can easily see every single container, which helps me a lot during cooking. All I need now is a Lazy Susan in the center for the oil and vinegar bottles, right?
Send this article to that friend whose spice rack is a complete mess too!

They also have this very idea in a box at Walmart for 5 bucks. I have one, it took me less than 5 mins to put together, and I love it. It is also adjustable to fit just about any size cabinet, and its buildable if your cabinet is tall enough for 2 layers. No hammering, hassle, or measuring needed.

Have a question about this project?
I don't get how this is a drawer. Did I misunderstand?
I am having trouble seeing how this looks from the outside. I love the idea but can you take another photo of how it all looks from outside?
Why did you use the word "drawer"? It looks like a shelf, not a drawer - or is it?
