Make your own bait! It gets carried back to the nest and kills the queen. Soak a cotton ball in the following solution and place in the middle of the "line" near wear they come in.
Ant Bait
1 1/2 Cups warm water
1 1/2 TBSP Borax
mix well
add 1/2 Cup sugar
mix well
Store in airtight container
You need to keep this out of the reach of children & pets as it is toxic. If you need, you can put the cotton ball in a small plastic container with a few ant sized holes drilled in the bottom sides
I hope that helps

Peppermint oil on cotton will do the trick
Ants are clever little critters that can smell food a mile away and send the colony over to bring it back to their nest...so you probably have a food source in your kitchen or inside your cabinets for them to be there at all. I had a problem every Spring with ants in the kitchen...and cleaned out every shelf of my cabinets ...and even got a full cover for my toaster with a zipper because if your toaster is on the counter or inside the cabinets, there are small crumbs from bread in there...and they will find it! Ever since toaster cover is in there I have had no ants this year at all...
I Use packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are coming in (if you can find it), or even on your counter in a small lid. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.
Wash surfaces well with Dawn, or similar dish detergent. Wipe down all walls, counters with distilled white vinegar, full strength. It destroys the trail ants leave for their friends. All food items must be secured in tight fitting containers (even table salt!).
I thought borax was safe. What is the dangerous element of this mix?
Hi Yvonne - This is the most effective and all-natural method we use. Good luck! Hugs, Holly
