Hi Beverly, you will want to cut the entire door entirely round. I would use a jig saw for this. Once that's done you will have to build an entirely new frame for it and you will need a large gate hinge to support it.

By Hobbit Door, I immediately imagine the door you might see on Keebler Ads or the Smurfs. These Traditionally Curve at the top like an arch, and thus cannot be made of entirely edged [Square or rectangular] resource to that same effect of:

The Door Panels reduce in Size proportionately to the Arch

Without tearing off the top 2/3ds.

This means: it is easier to construct your own using a 3ply or 5ply method, than it is to use the 1/2 Door, to result that you end up having wood remnants that are in totality a fully disassembled half door anyway.

Thus to actually diagram that hobbit door you need wood that is as wide as the widest part of that arch, at least 3 but 5 if you are doing 5 ply. You need cut the Arch from all 3, and make 1 or 3 Solid Arch pieces with 2 of Arch Trim to create that inlayed panel look. All else is straughtforward as far as doors go: glue, clamp and Screw, multi-ply using 1/4 inch panel boards. And after that is done you mount your hinges and hardwares only on the straight edge sections.
