How do you refinish a side table that has a leather inlay?

  • If the leather is in good shape, tape it off with painter's tape and refinish the wood around it.

    If you have to remove the leather and underneath isn’t refinishable, replace with tile or a different style of wood like barn wood in a chevron pattern.

  • You can paint over leather as well. Just scuff it up with a bit of sandpaper, clean it well. Them prime it. I always prime the tops of pieces since they get extra wear and tear. Then paint.

    I'd like to preserve the leather as it has an inlay of gold trim around it and goes from a rectangle table to an oval when the leaves are up - thinking I have to re-do it in the same dark wood it is now - any particular way to really clean the leather section (has some scuff marks but not distracting ones....thanks!
