What is the best snake deterent?
Terrible phoba of snakes keeps me from enjoying our country yard. HOW and What keeps snakes away. Don't tell me about keeping grass cut short--we do that faithfully and still the critters seem to like to streatch out and 'sun themselves'

Margaret, spread moth balls around the yard. Don’t leave water in the yard as in doggy dishes, bird baths, and small areas that tend to fill during a rain. If you have a porch, enclose it with fine mesh and big nails or staples. And keep a rifle handy, or follow my Mamaw Woods, and keep a sharpened hoe nearby when you go into the yard. Be safe! ☺️
Keep a shovel nearby. I chopped the heads off of three this year. PS I am 76 years of age. Snakes beware.
Move...that's what I did.
You may not care for snakes, but getting rid of them means you will see more of other things -- like rodents. Snakes are helpful, especially in the country. As long as you are not seeing rattlers or copperheads (you didn't say what part of the country you are in) or other poisonous snakes, get a book on different kinds of snakes in your area, a pair of binoculars, and sit on the deck and identify and learn about them. And maybe you will learn to appreciate them for the helpful creatures God made them to be.
Hi Margaret Ann. There's a product called 'snake away', I don't know how well it will work in your situation though. I just use it around the perimeter of the house and deck. It seems to help. You could also try using the little mobile pinwheels that are used to keep vibrations going in the ground. They're made to keep moles and gopher turtles from burrowing. I stepped into a copperhead nest when I was young. My guardian angel neighbor plucked me out and away, so I know your fear all too well!
Margaret, buy a case. Sound as if SnakeAway could empower you! Thanks, Karen Brunk. ☺️
