Help, how can i make this into a art roomand dinning room?

"A place for everything and everything in its place" is my mantra! First, organize: Begin by separating things into piles of like stuff, but make the piles in another room. Painting supplies, adhesives of all kinds, fabrics, tools (glue guns, scissors, exacto knives, etc.) books/videos, paper, pencils/markers, ribbons, etc. Then get as many plastic stacking bins as necessary and stack as high as you can see into. Label the bins, and start filling them.

Carolyn, I would completely clear out the whole room, then put back and neatly arrange the things you really need. You can use boxes, baskets, cubbies or most anything. You will probably find a lot of things you will want to give away, store somewhere, donate, or put in the trash. Good luck, I know this isn't easy. Search the dollar tree for things you can use to neaten up the place.

First, I'd go through EVERYTHING in this room and donate (or toss what can't be reused) half of it. Keep only items you KNOW you'll use again. Then, I'd divide up everything into what would be in your craft area and what would be in your dining room. Anything that doesn't fit into these 2 categories needs to find a new home elsewhere. ;) Then, I'd look at storage options on Pinterest or at a storage store and figure out some ideas on how to store all of the crafts. Plastic shelves are great, but you need some bins, etc. for smaller items that go together. Good luck!!! I love big projects like this! :)

Being an artist/crafter is messy, I know. But it doesn't mean you have to be disorganized. Your stuff is mixed up everywhere. My best advice, the one trick that works for me, is not shelves but those plastic drawer carts. They stack, too (yeah!) and you can label them. Use a piece of tape and label: paints, glues, adhesives, silk flowers, color pencils, brushes, tools, fabric scraps, instruction books, ideas . . . on and on. Inside each drawer, you can organize small things in plastic cups. TOSS everything that you haven't used in over a year. Hang big stuff with command hooks. And when you're done with a project put all your stuff back in the drawers. It's amazing how much you over-buy when you're not sure what you have. The drawer systems works great for inventory, too.

Carolyn; There is too much here to merely organize!! (I'll bet there are double and triples+ of supplies that you have.)

Be ruthless! GIVE AWAY (Goodwill?) extra supplies... a novice crafter will thank you!

Do NOT say: "Oh! I may use this someday." ...that just leads to more craft supply hoarding -- and it's probably how you got to this state in the first place. If you've not used in a year... get rid of it. NO excuses!

That simple suggestion will give you space for your crafting supplies AND your dining room. Remember THAT goal as you purge those supplies!

BTW: Using canvas bins will make the space more pleasant for dining... so your guests are not looking at glue and paint!

Get your self some bins with tops so you could store stuff in them and get a deck box for out side it’s waterproof store all your stuff in that

I disagree in saving things especially when it comes to art supplies, I know because I too am an artist and have many supplies that I won't give up. I wouldn't buy too made plastic stacking bins unless they are really heavy duty because ones that aren't won't hold the weight. Keep an eye out for wooden crates at second hand stores because they are usually stronger. I also do craft projects so I have a ton of supplies for arts and crafts. If you can afford a bakers rack it would be good way to have bins of different sizes to hold your supplies.

If you have one wall that you can use I would put shelving or wall bins on the wall. After all your organizing and purging you can put what you are keeping into cute labeled bins that don’t clash with your dining room style. If possible on that same wall install a fold down table that you can use when crafting instead of your dining room table. I would try to put that in a corner in case you need to leave something out to finish later. Also put some less used items into a tote or two that you can store in a closet somewhere and get out only when needed. When labeling your bins also make a list of what is in each bin and put it in the bin for reference. That’s what I had to do in a bathroom cabinet full of everything but now at least I look at the list and move on to the next bin if it’s not there. It saves digging, lol

I think purge , save and organize , label drawers like someone mention, inside the drawers you can use baby food jars for smallish things, ice cubes trays or muffin tins for organizing

Yikes you need an organizer. How about building some seating benches with lift up lids to store the craft stuff in place of all the chairs on two sides. I would start by organizing all the craft stuff into labeled storage containers, I've done a few folks with the Dollar Tree clear plastic shoe boxes.

I know you are short on space , so you need to clear everything out then may be purchase one of those book cases that you can use as a sideboard or room devider and the fabric bins that fit inside each box in the bookcase . I hope you understand what I am talking about . Not a very good description . I also like clear shoe boxes for markers and scissors , glue etc

Hi Carolyn. I'm Cindy. Begin by going thru all your supplies. Get rid of the items you don't use. Then make piles of different like items. Perhaps put the paint brushes in one pile. And keep making piles until you have gone thru it all. Once you're done, you will be able to see how many storage boxes it will take to store everything. You can get clear shoe boxes at the Dollar Store. They stack well. Label the boxes of what's inside them. For larger items, use bigger boxes. Use those shelves that you already have to store your boxes. If they look too messy, put a curtain in front of them. And when doing your work, only take out the boxes you need for that project. Reclaiming your dining room will be great. I hope this helps you. Best of luck.

I am an artist, too, live in a mobile home, and have a very organized art room. I had an Organizing Business once and this is how I ran it:

Take three large boxes - one for TRASH, one for DONATE and one for KEEP. Decide where to start, even the top of the table, then put the timer on. This is very exhausting business so allow yourself no more than 30 mins in one area. Then take every item and separate it into the three boxes. Take out the TRASH immediately, and put the DONATE in the car (that can go to Goodwill), then go through the KEEP box a couple of times and make sure you really need to keep all those items. Don't just start putting them away - ask yourself is you really need them.

Buy yourself some Dollar General plastic chest of drawers. Some even have wheels, and the drawers are fairly strong, at least to hold art supplies. A few of these chests and, of course, a large, folding table (if you have room) are necessary for art work. Spend a couple of days and you will soon have a super organized art room.

I'd suggest cleaning out first. Get rid of things you no longer use or need to be thrown away. If you don't use them and they're still good, consider donating to a local charity or thrift shop. Next, sort what's left into groups according to its purpose or use. Then decide how you'll store them (boxes, bins, baskets, etc.). Finally, put everything into it's storage solution and store on your shelves, drawers, closet (?), whatever space you have. You may need to really purge to be able to contain all your supplies in the space you have available. Best wishes!
