I had an old aluminium tray, it's one that I have had for about 20 years.
It certainly had that well worn patina.
But I thought it needed a spruce up...and i did that with modpodge glue, decoupage paper and some cord.
I had some decoupage papers in my stash, but I chose the black and white perfume bottle one.
First I measured and cut two sheets of the paper to fit the tray.
Then I used modpodge glue and pasted a thick layer over the metal tray.
Then very carefully placed the decoupage paper on to the glue.
Pressing it in place.
Then I put another layer of paper on top the first paper layer in the same way.
Once in place carefully painted a layer of glue over it to act as a protectant sealer.
Then I put a line of modpodge glue around the paper edge.
Onto that I placed the cord. The cord I used was in two pieces. Mainly as these were saved 'handles' from a paper shop bag that I wanted to upcycle.
But you could use cord or string in one entire length.
Leave the tray to dry for 24 hours.
I used my upcycled tray in a side table display to put some lovely French style bottles on.
But you could display anything on it from a collection of candles or as a center piece layered with a book stack and ornament on a coffee table.
Note:
I would only use this decoupage technique on a decor display tray as it would not be wash in the sink of dishwater.
To clean just a wipe with a damp cloth will suffice.
