A few months ago, we were given a "West Elm" challenge. Needless to say, I missed the deadline, but did not lose the inspiration nor the desire to complete. When I first saw this, not only did I like the simplicity, but also the design. A price tag of $299 excited me because I estimated I could replicate it for less than $20 since I already had a frame I thought would work. The frame I use was purchased at a garage sale for $5.

I started with two 12x12 white cardstocks and tore each into 5 pieces (total ten torn strips. Be sure to tear the far left and right edges.

This is my first attempt at using water colors. I found the palette with all the right colors at Walmart for around $4.

Notice the rough edges as well as some white left in some areas on the edges - see! How easy is that. If you can see the little white paper in the upper left side - this is a picture of the original weave from West Elm. Sorry but I could not upload it as I was getting an error message.

The picture frame I had on hand was about 22x26 with a white mat mounted above another white mat with space in between. It has a picture which I painted with my white gesso recipe (from MomPodge the Mother of Gesso and Modeling Paste). After about three coats (drying in between) I decided to use a white tissue paper and MomPodged to add dimension interest. This last feature was not part of the inspiration piece.

I position the weave so that the borders are equal left and right, top and bottom. The pieces want to move around with the slightest movement so I hot glued, first the four corners and then in strategic places so as not to slip while hanging in place.

Mounted in the frame and secured with staples in the back.

Notice that because of the careful placement of the weave its can be hung either horizontal or vertical. I should note that the "original" was a white frame whereas I happen to have a silver. Truth is I like the silver better as it seems to highlight the greys and black. The original was in a 20x30 frame where mine is 26x22. I think it works just as well.

I'm not hanging the picture as it is meant to be a gift.
