I think I would ask the local historical society for advice.

I don't know if in your are there are any salvage places? In Minnesota where I live they have several options, take a piece of your brick, a chip? and use your phone to take a picture of the size, texture shape etc. measure the brick size. Try shopping your salvage stores for something that will work. You may get lucky if the bricks were made in your area, but you more than likely won't get an exact match. New bricks will never work, so old is best. Finding old bricks is the key. At that point talk to someone who does tile work and can advise you on how to remove the old bricks and matching the grout. They do make tools to remove old grout...If you can afford to have someone do that part get an estimate on just the labor? another idea would be a "restoration specialist"

Have you thought about painting the brick floor? I have seen many people painting floor tile lately so I would think you could paint a brick floor too.

Oh no painting would ruin the historic value. Check in the closet, under cabinets etc. You may be able to steal matching bricks form places where it does not matter.
