sub flooring is for under the floor that you want to put on top. You could stain it, but it will not look good.
Sand, prime, sand paint. Will last longer if use oil based primer and paint. I lived with a painted subfloor for 4 years while I was saving up for custom wood floors. Use an area rug, looked fine.
Hi Mary! When I was fixing up a bedroom in our old house I ripped out the old carpet, cleaned up the floor, filled the seams and then painted it with floor paint. It looked great until I could afford new flooring. I didn't have the interest in doing it at the time, but, you can use a stencil to make it look even better. Go to a paint counter and find out what colors they can mix for you.
Depending on the grade of the wood, you could do a couple of things that would work. Check out these projects:

Also, you could paint a "rug" on it.
And if you’re on a really tight budget use brown paper and make the leather look floors. They are actually quite beautiful!
