What's an inexpensive way to create a dance floor on plywood surface?

I have an un heated or cooled room above the garage that I want to use to practice dance. I don’t want to spend a lot because this is just a family hobby. The floor is currently just builder grade plywood.

Hi Diana, I know they sell roll out dance mats and have dance floor kits that are fairly inexpensive. I also found this Pinterest page that might be able to help you: https://www.pinterest.com/explore/outdoor-dance-floors/

I would measure it out . Then I would go to home depot , Lowe's , lumber liquidators...and look for something on clearance , a peel and stick tile or plank , plan on getting a little extra . Always good to have a few extra time , just in case ... I would definitely stay away from ceramic tile , for three reasons , #1- it is very heavy and the structure might not have been built to handle the load bearing weight. #2- if someone falls on ceramic it will hurt !!! #3- you said it is not heated, the file will keep it very , very cold . Good luck ! Get idea to have an area that the family can enjoy together !

Maybe a piece of linoleum would do. I’m talking about the commercial real linoleum, not vinyl flooring. Or linoleum squares. Try Menards or Home Depot. Get a good wax on it and buff till shiny? I’m no dancer, but I’ve slipped and slid on a shiny linoleum floor 😊.

A very inexpensive way to go would be to purchase 4X8 sheets of melanite (sp) and glue them to your plywood. I believe they could even be waxed if you desire something more slippery.

  • Hi Diana,

Do you know what kind of floor you want? My first thought was laminate which can be pretty inexpensive but also look good. It is also easy to install.
