Some of the cost depends on the current condition of the fire place. Would you need to have any work done to the chimney? Is the brick fireplace in good working condition? If all you want to do is give the brick chimney a face lift why not paint or whitewash the brick? That would update the look and be inexpensive too.
Paint it or whitewash it. Which sounds more to your liking and would go with the style of your home?
Hello,
Paint it or or consider adding tiles like the many home improvement shows do.

If you're looking to change the look and you like a rustic/industrial or similar, try staining some old pallet boards; build a tight frame around the structure - you will need to add a new mantle to fit, maybe splurge on a piece of live edge wood. And then "panel" over the frame with the stained pallet wood. You could run it all the way up to the ceiling and trim it out for a finished look.
