How do you properly dead-head roses and spot sucker stems on bushes?

My best suggestion is to get a book on Roses that is full of illustrations. If you don't want to buy new, you can always get one from Charity shop or eBay . Then you will always have it as a reference.etc.

Just pinch off the spent roses and any rose hips that form. Suckers usually come out of the grown for roses so you can just cut them off. Trim the excessively long branches and remove all crossover branches from the center so the light and air get in to the middle. Trim the actual bush slowly so as to shape it.

I cut mine off 6" from dead bud if on single stem or back to where there is split &/or multiple stems or new buds forming. Suckers are the new green stems that grow from woody stalks,cut them flush with woody stalk. Sprinkle bone meal around the base of plant in soil. I think it's great you are caring extra for them,I would too. After all you'll have gorgeous roses to see & smell.
