Here is a link with several different cat trees. Find the one you like and click on the title and it should take you to a site where the plans are discussed. Good luck!

It's all a matter of studying the exemplars and sourcing your supplies. The base needs to be large enough to not tip over when the cats jump up on it. The tree branches can be obtained from a local tree trimmer - instead of tossing through a chipper, they can give it to you. Here is the caveat. Unless the tree has been dead for some time, you need to "cure" the tree limbs and that takes time, it can take up to a year for them to dry out sufficiently for you to use. When ready, you need to bolt the branches to the base. Will take some trial and error to get it balanced properly. No two tree limbs are the same. Here are some sites to help you out.

Get log from the woods if you are around any parks, outdoor areas;firewood sales place(ask for uncut piece may need skinned/cleaned) or maybe lumber yard. Log can be attached using huge washers & bolts-you'll need one or two pieces of solid plywood for base depending on size/height of log used to keep it from tipping also need to take cats weight into consideration. dbl the plywood square by glueing 2 together use wood construction glue adhesive & wood screws, drill hole thru plywood sheets and into base of log then use xtra lrg bole to attach. Hole in plywood closest to floor side will need to be lrger so bolt is flush inside so it will sit level on floor . Let me see if I can find you a video Here's a few https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoNTQKZ8ik4 More no show me video but listen for info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e73q8FHRLrQ one more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEzvO5MVrT4 I would not use sisal or anything they'll like wood to scratch less problem with it getting ratty, torn up and staples or glue cat eating them. No paint or stain they can ingest either.
Thank you all! I never expected a response,
let alone 5 responses with great ideas!
I do appreciate all of you taking the time to answer my question.
Graciously,
