Put the pit into a glass or jar with water. The seed will split and roots and a single stem will start growing. After it becomes more sturdy and more leaves appear, you can put it carefully into dirt. I have started several this way. Some worked better than others.
I forgot to say that you push toothpicks into the pit to suspend the pit in the jar of water.
