I have an old fireplace with brown bricks with a propane insert. Looking to update it including the mantle. Any inexpensive ideas?

You could whitewash the brick or cover it with tile. You could use a mosaic tile and use a Schluter edge to give it a finished edge. Paint the insert all black to get rid of the gold. I can't really see the mantle, but you could cover it with tile or a slab of travertine and then use an edging of travertine too.

The first two pictures are showing you a split face 12x12 mosaic tile with a slab of travertine and travertine chair rail around the edge. The next two are showing you how Schluter will cover the rough edges and give you a clean finished look. The last picture is just showing you a different color tile with Schluter edging. On that one we used travertine tiles and crown molding for the edging.

Hi there! I would white wash the brick and spray paint the gold either silver or black. You could also purchase the new backsplash peal and stick tile to cover that piece of tile that's on the floor really inexpensively.

Paint the mantle white and update decor to a current style.

You can also spray paint the gold with high heat paint and change to black. That would probably give you a huge impact.

I would just paint. Will really make a difference.

One of the easiest and cheapest things to do would be to paint the brick. If you got some high heat spray paint you could paint the surround or at least the gold trim.
